The following series of paintings is an extension of my ongoing love affair with the past, both as it relates to African-Americans and to Americans in general. It represents my deep belief in the power of the old adage: if you don’t know where you’ve been, you can’t know where you’re going. I believe every person who cares about the directions in which the African-American community and this country are headed should know something about what transpired in the generations that have come and gone. I hope this work deepens the extent of our national engagement with black history, so that our present efforts to better our communities and our nation can be improved upon.
